- The first goal is obtaining and interpreting radiographs.
We want the intern to be able to utilize a 1000MA machine, as well as small
portable radiographic machines. Radiographic views that you should become
comfortable obtaining and interpreting include head, chest, abdomen and
all limb views.
- The intern should be able to evaluate the upper airway
via endoscopy for laryngeal hemiplegia, guttural pouch disease, etc.
- Lameness exams are a large portion of the practice.
The intern (s) will be involved with both regional and intraarticular anesthesia.
- During the breeding season, the clinic performs a
significant amount of reproductive work. This includes rectal palpation,
ultrasonography, artificial insemination and work-up of problem mares.
- Arizona Equine utilizes diagnostic ultrasonography
for abdominal scans, liver/kidney biopsy, chest, tendon and cardiac scans.
Although we do not expect interns to be an expert in the field of ultrasonography,
we would like you to have a working knowledge of ultrasonography.
- The ambulatory portion of the practice is consistently
busy. This includes a wide variety of cases including field colics, castrations,
laceration repair, vaccinations, and routine cases.
- One intern will assist during the majority of surgical
procedures. This will allow the development of surgical skills that should
enable the intern to perform routine procedures competently or to enter
a surgical residency upon completion of the internship.
- The intern will be writing at least one article per
month for local lay magazines. The clinic also occasional sponsors seminars
for horse owners and we may ask that each veterinarian present a short talk.
- Equipment available includes blood chemistry analyzer,
blood gas analyzer, ultrasonography, video endoscopy, nuclear scintigraphy,
a 1000 MA radiograph machine, surgical laser and video arthroscopic and
laparoscopic capabilities. There are 12 indoor stalls, 15 outdoor stalls,
and 2 additional outdoor day stalls utilized for horses being dropped off
for same day pick up. The surgical caseload includes arthroscopy, ASIF fracture
repair, colic surgery, as well as more routine procedures.
